Computers
Software
is often times ported to many different hardware platorms.
I have lumped all software together, specifing the
platforms available when I know it.
Computers can be divided into some basic catagories:
-
Mainframes
-
Mini-computers
such as
Unix
workstations
(i.e.
Sun
workstations,
RS/6000
workstations, etc.)
-
Micro-Computers
such as
PCs
or
Macs
.
-
Palmtops
which started out life as glorified organizers, but have become
compact programming environments.
I personally think the PDA should be replaced by the
PDE.
-
Settops
are a bit of a stretch to call "computers" per see, but fill a
niché internet market.
Most of these types of computers use various peripheral devices:
-
Memory
-
Flash Media
(USB drives, SD cards, etc.)
-
SCSI hardware
(cables, terminators, switches, extenders, etc.)
-
Floppy drives
(and high capacity removable media, like Zip/Jazz drives)
-
Tape drives
for backing up your data
-
CDROM drives, CDROM jukeboxes, CD-R archivers, MO optical drives, etc.
-
Hard Drives
-
RAID boxes
-
Standalone NFS/SMB/CIFS file servers
-
Serial Ports
-
Modems
-
Scanners
-
Printers
-
Routers, terminal servers, etc.
and
cables
-
Monitors
-
Media
(diskettes, tapes, etc.)
-
Uninterruptable Power Supplies
and
Power Cables
-
Misc.
-
