This is a red signal flare.
When fired, the shell bursts at approximately 170M altitude
and releases 5 illuminating "stars" which burn for 7 to 11
seconds. The shells are used for signalling and are bright
enough to be used during the day as well as night.
This round is related to the
M585 White Star Shell, and the
M663 Green Star Shell.
